Gary Edward White “Pops”

Gary Edward White “Pops,” 63, of Hoover, AL passed away peacefully Sunday, March 14, 2021 surrounded by his children and their spouses. A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, March 18, 2021 at Bluff Park United Methodist in Hoover, AL. Visitation will be from 11am-12pm with a memorial service to follow in the sanctuary to honor Gary’s Life. Gary was born March 2, 1958 at Brookwood Hospital. He graduated from Berry High School in 1976 where he received a scholarship to play football at Jacksonville State University. Gary was a graduate of Jacksonville State University in 1981, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Education with a focus on teaching and coaching. While at Jacksonville University, Gary was very involved on campus and a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity until he graduated. Gary was the father of 3, and the grandfather of 4. Gary loved to fish, hunt, and coach, but above all he loved his family and friends. He will be dearly missed by everyone who knew him, but we find there is peace knowing he was met by his loving wife who preceded him in death, surrounded by loved ones, and the Father Almighty. Gary is preceded in death by his father, Benny “Joe” White, mother Shirley White, and loving wife Laurie White; He is survived by his children, Zachary White (Shelby); and their three children, Kayli Chafin (15), Joseph Bryant (13), Amelia Claire White (21mo), Andrew White (Emily), and his daughter Emily Harris (Ethan) and their daughter Saylor Mae Harris (1yr). In addition, he is survived by his siblings Steve White (Lisa), Jimmy White (Suzanne), Donna Schanbacher (Billy). He is also survived by many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. If anyone wishes to donate flowers, the family requests donations be sent to Bluff Park United Methodist Church or monetary donations be made to The Foundry Ministries. We remember Gary White by the love he shared with his family and friends. Gary was always down for a fishing trip, ball game, or hunt at any point. Gary’s voice was one that was very recognizable and could carry for miles. Dad taught his children how to be a team and to work together. Dad we will forever honor your legacy as the best team there is, and you will forever be our coach.

  4. To the White Family,

You all were a big part of my childhood and your Dad was one of a kind. Great man that loved his family. He was my coach growing up and Zac and I were on the same team almost every year. He was full of energy and had a passion for coaching. He will be dearly missed and so will Laurie, who never missed a game. Love you all and praying for the Lord to let his love comfort you all.

  8. Gary was a fellow Gamecock with me at JSU. He was always an intense, passionate, kind, caring and good teammate. We all worked together and won championships at JSU. I loved my years with him. I haven’t seen Gary for years, but learning of his family, his passing and his continuing legacy of goodness, I want the family to know that the Gary you loved so much was the same Gary that his band of brothers loved while we served as Gamecocks.
Please accept my sincere and heartfelt condolences.
