Carolyn Cox Hunter
Carolyn Cox Hunter passed away on December 5, 2019. She was 85. She was born on November 19, 1934 to Alberta and R.V. Cox in Birmingham, Alabama. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson Grammar School, Ensley High School (valedictorian), and Birmingham-Southern College (cum laude). While at Birmingham-Southern, Carolyn was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority and was elected to Who’s Who and Mortar Board. Carolyn was a devoted teacher for many years. She taught the eighth grade at Woodrow Wilson Grammar, the sixth grade at Noble Street Elementary in Anniston, Alabama, and for 16 years, she taught kindergarten at Pilgrim Congregational in Birmingham. She started the after-school program at Edgewood Elementary School in Homewood, where she served for 12 years. Carolyn married her beloved Bob on June 29, 1957. She and Bob were faithful members of Trinity Presbyterian for 34 years, then South Highland Presbyterian for the last 25 years of Carolyn’s life. Her love of teaching children continued at both Trinity and South Highland, where she taught children’s Sunday School for many years. She loved her last 25 years at South Highland and was active in many different capacities, including singing in the choir; serving as a deacon, an elder, and a member of the Flower Guild; and volunteering in the church office. Her friends and her faith community meant the world to her. Carolyn is survived by her loving husband Bob; her sister Becky Robinson (Tom); her two children Lisa Hunter Rutherford (Robert) and Wayne Lewis Hunter (Debbie); and three grandchildren Robert Howard Rutherford III (Katharine), Lauren Allison Hunter, and John Hunter Rutherford (Allie). A memorial service will be held at South Highland Presbyterian Church in Birmingham at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, December 11, 2019.
