Desmond Leonard Lowrey
Desmond Leonard Lowrey, also known as Leonard Lowrey, III, passed away peacefully on November 25, 2020, age 70, at home with his family. He was born in Selma, Alabama and grew up on his family farm outside of Greensboro, Alabama.
He is preceded in death by his parents Leonard M. Lowrey, Jr. and Lena Crain Lowrey. Leonard was the eldest of five children and is survived by his sister, Anna Lowrey Wilson (Phil) and niece, Katie Wilson, of Alabaster, Alabama and brothers Bruce Lowrey of Kihei, Hawai’i, Joe Lowrey (Diana) of Phoenix, Arizona, Gregg Lowrey (Sara) and nephew Andrew of Alabaster, Alabama.
Leonard attended Greensboro High School West, Greensboro, Alabama and received a BA degree at the University of West Alabama, Livingston, Alabama. He loved the outdoors and nature and frequently took his friends turkey and deer hunting on his farm outside Thomaston, Alabama. Leonard was very knowledgeable about medicine, nutrition, and the stock market. He was also very intelligent and funny. Everyone who remembers Leonard is asked to celebrate his life in their own way, telling a story about him or sharing a special memory. He was blessed to have so many wonderful friends and family that loved him so much.
In memory of Leonard, he would want you to do an unexpected act of kindness for someone less fortunate or donate to Children’s Hospital, Thomaston Cemetery, or your local Humane Society. The family is deferring a memorial service until November 2021, when we can meet and celebrate Leonard’s life and share memories of him.

We will certainly miss the calls and visits with Lenny. He had a special gift of getting folks in a good mood. You knew when he called, you would be in for an hour of laughs.
Lenny was blessed to have a loving mom and a sister who he knew had his back. Anna proved that by taking care of him. Lenny spoke of his mom, sister and niece often.
We will miss him, but be forever grateful for knowing him.
God Bless…
So sorry to hear about Deb. My prayers are with the family.
Wes has been best friends with Leonard since 2010. We would often go out to eat and they would hunt together. They would talk on the phone several times a day. We love Leonard and we will miss him dearly!! He loved to tell Janet what to eat and not to eat.??

I have only known Leonard for the last 12-15 years, but he was a true friend. He called several times a week to check on me and to just to laugh and have fun. We would go turkey hunting and laugh till we knew that we was not going to kill a turkey, but it didn’t matter because we were having fun. He always told me that no matter the time ,place or hour of the day or night, do not hesitate to call if I needed help and he would be there and he sincerely meant that. I am grateful for the friendship I had w it Leonard and he will definitely be missed.
Leonard and I have been friends for over 30 years. He will truly be missed. You could be having a bad day but when talking to Leonard he’d make you laugh. He has a sister who is a true angel from God. We will dearly miss him.
As far back as I can remember, Deb was my first and oldest buddy. I can remember like it was yesterday, spending the night and getting up and exploring their minnow and crawdad farm. What really made it special was Deb’s exuberance. I had recently rekindled my friendship with him after 40 years, over many long phone calls and he had never changed. I’m very saddened and shocked. My condolences to Bruce, and Joe and to the rest of his family, I know you’ll miss him as I will.
My heart goes out to the
Lowery Family. There is nothing I can say or do to change the situation. But I
can say I lostt a true friend and I will really miss him. Leonard never met a stranger and enjoyed life. Some of my fondest moments with Leonard was hunting, talking nonsense on the phone and eating “camp food”, as he called it. I loved him like a brother and my life will be a little dimmer now that he’s gone.
I am so sorry to hear about Leonard. As his cousin from Birmingham, I remember many happy days in Greensboro. He was always kind to his “city cousins” and had a great sense of humor. He visited us a few years ago with his sweet mama (who he loved dearly) and we enjoyed a great morning together at the Pepper Place Farmers Market. I regret not having more time with him and am so sorry that he has gone.
My condolences to Anna Mary, Bruce, Joe, and Greg. Voncille Causey called me with the news of Deb’s death. We talked about old times in her and Ronny’s youth group at the Presbyterian Church. I also remember Deb as tough football teammate. Mike Bonds, Sam Taylor, Deb and I were roommates at U of A. Deb showed me the ropes, since he was a soph. and I was a freshman. Deb was a person who everyone wanted to be around because he made a person feel good.
Bruce Bonds
As far back as I can remember Deb was my first buddy. We were 6 years old I think. I moved away and hadn’t seen or talked to Deb since high school. We recently rekindled our friendship over many phone calls over the past two years, for which, I am very grateful. I was shocked and saddened to hear the news. I know he will be missed greatly because he was so full of life. And I will also. To Joe and Bruce and the rest of the family, my deepest condolences.
My brother was an inspiration to me because he was always so positive and he believed in me. He would cheer me on and encourage me to love others, eat right to be healthy, and make something of myself. Lenny never stayed mad at you, so he loved unconditionally. He always told me to love even if they didn’t like me, don’t burn bridges because you may need to go back across again. He was so intelligent and helped me so many times with how to fix something, how to invest in stocks, what nutritional foods to eat to help stay healthy. I was so blessed to be with him the last months of his life. We shared some special times together, had some good laughs, and learned about the family history. I will miss my big brother. Just today, I picked up my phone to call him. I will miss all of our talks and text and laughing at post on social media. Lenny was so funny and had quick wit. He made people feel good. Lenny loved his family and especially my mother. He took such good care of her. Lenny was good to others and did good deeds, by helping others and giving to those in need. He was a good friend and was blessed with so many friendships. I thank all of his friends for being there for him and calling to check on him. I am thankful for all the prayers that were prayed for Lenny during his illness and for the comforting words and calls after his passing. Lenny will always be in my thoughts and forever be in my heart. May he rest in eternal peace. Until we meet again in heaven, Katie and I will forever love you, my sweet brother.
Lenny was the oldest of five siblings. He was tall and strong and lived close to the earth. He was so knowledgeable about gardening and farming. I guess that’s where his interest in health and nutrition came from.
We sometimes called him Debbie as a youngster, short for desmond.
He was very close to his father, LM. It seemed like they were more like brothers than father and son.
He also loved his mama! I was at Lea’s house one day when he brought and planted a special tree that she wanted in her backyard.
He was so good natured, funny, and he loved his friends.
We will miss him.
But, I’m so glad that I knew him!
Warm blessings to his siblings.
You are all in my heart.
Leonard was my big brother and always looked after the family after our parents passed away. He taught me to always be humble no matter the circumstances. He was also a natural born comedian and could always make me laugh; I always looked forward to our get-togethers with him. Leonard had a keen interest in both the natural world and natural remedies. After one of my mother’s friends complained of being chronically tired and lethargic, Leonard told her matter-of-factly, both to her and my mother’s horror, that she probably needed to be wormed. The woman’s husband is still laughing about that. That was classic Leonard. He was loved and he will be missed.
My Uncle Lenny as I called him was one of the funniest, and most kind hearted men I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. He always knew what to say to help me get through hard time’s and tough decisions. It’s very sad that he has passed away, yet I know he is happy and at peace in heaven. I hope as he watches me, his family and friends from above and he can be happy with how we are living, as well as crack a joke like he always did. He will forever be in my heart and mind, especially when I see something that reminds me of him. I will never forget his smile and how much of an amazing uncle he was to me. I love you Lenny, forever in my heart.
